US built 2,000 km of Mississippi levees; Louisiana later lost 4,900 sq km of land

The construction of levees along the Mississippi River has led to significant coastal land erosion in Louisiana by obstructing critical river sediment from reaching coastal estuaries. In an effort to combat this issue, environmental agencies are now reintroducing river mud into the affected bayous.
